How it works

Scale weight - tare weight = pounds of propane.

Exchange tanks are sometimes underfilled, so usable capacity may be less than the labeled 20 lb in practice.

FAQ

Where do I find tare weight (TW)?

Look on the tank collar/handle ring. TW is the empty tank weight stamped on the metal, often around 16-30 lb depending on tank type.

What if my current weight is lower than tare weight?

That usually means one of the numbers was entered incorrectly. Recheck your scale reading and the stamped TW value.

Why is my "20 lb" tank not showing 20 lb when full?

Many exchange tanks are underfilled for safety and operations. It is common for usable propane to be below the labeled capacity.

How accurate is this calculator?

It is a practical estimate based on your scale reading and TW. Accuracy depends on correct inputs and scale precision.
